Grief and Bereavement Support

Life is about making and cultivating healthy connections, we call them relationships. After the loss of someone we have had a relationship with, the absence of this connection can be overwhelming. If you need guidance moving forward after a loss The Journey program offers support in those times when grief is keeping you from taking the next step in your life.

The Mission of The Journey is to support three key areas within the Guiding Hospice family:

  1. 1. Our Patients and their Closest Connections:  This includes Pre-Bereavement support and post death. One on one “new normal” planning, grief support groups, educational mailings and community resources.

  2. 2. Our Staff:  Assisting our team with setting healthy boundaries and creating a sustainable work/life balance. Personal care support in the areas of mental and emotional wellbeing as a result of the secondary trauma of doing the work of hospice.

  3. 3. Our Community Partners:  Educational resources for topics of compassion fatigue, patient loss, and personal grief.

Philosophy of Care

Our bereavement support emphasizes we don’t “get over” a loss; learning to live with the loss encourages acceptance of the grief experience as a JOURNEY

We encourage grief expression as part of the life experience, and not merely tasks to be accomplished to “get better.”  Our Grief Journey is a time of mourning, a time of adapting to our loss.

Our Chaplains facilitate several support groups weekly in Austin and the surrounding area. These groups are open to anyone in the community who has experienced loss, caring for someone terminally ill or dealing with other forms of grief.
